POETRY & MUSIC AT CENTRAL PARK LIBRARY, SANTA CLARA

On July 20, 2009, the Central Park Library on Homestead Road, Santa Clara, hosted an event of poetry and music by the esteemed Nils Peterson, Poet Laureate of Santa Clara County.

The event took place at the Redwood room of the Central Park Library, where the Poet Laureate began his reading with a short, appropriate poem about a reading room. The event was well attended. The poet, as usual, regaled the audience with his large and varied repertoire of poems—a smorgasbord that offered delectable mouthfuls of poetry that the audience relished, craving for more.

His selection covered a wide spectrum of poems, some anecdotal, some descriptive, but mostly they were poems that the public could identify with or relate to. His simple, yet eloquent language somehow defines the poet where he can take the ordinary and make something extraordinary out of it.

For the music portion of the event, the poet sang in baritone, in unison with the Symphony Silicon Valley Singers, each holding a black binder, and bursting forth melodious notes and madrigals, fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la.

April is in my mistress' face
And July in her eyes hath place.
Within her bosom is September,
But in her heart a cold December.

-Thomas Morley

The poet’s personal candor and humor, which are his distinguishing traits, show through his poems, revealing a very genuine person, and an exceptional poet. You can be sure, that wherever he reads or performs with his music partners, he leaves his audience in awe and utter amazement, and wondering: "Can poetry be this delightful?"
